Poetry
She Showed Me The Way

It always was quite clear to me,
I was different than my family.
I would sit on the roof
mesmerized by the moon.
Something was calling me,
the chanting made me swoon.

The kids in highschool knew
that I was different too,
They would tease and taunt,
and call me names,
I was treated like a Jew.

Finally school was over,
I ventured on my own.
I always kept to myself,
I felt so all alone.
The chanting never stopped
when I looked up at the moon.
In fact it grew more powerful.
Something was going to happen
and happen very soon!

I heard the drums, the singing,
it was a night in May .
I felt so free as the moon
showed me the way.
A vision of a Goddess was
telling me, "You are Home."
Wrapping her arms around me
and I felt so safe and warm.

It was then I finally realized the
beautiful Lady of the Night,
Was my Mother, Teacher Goddess,
and she told me this was my rite!
She led me to the others who
were likemined just like me.
Now that I am a Witch,
I have found my True Family!

Talent Moving Mountains
Lashonda Scott Robinson

It is a pleasure to introduce the talent of Lashonda Scott Robinson a self taught artist. In 2002, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She lost the ability to use her hands and was paralyzed on her left side. She runs a gallery that specializes in quality unique art.A proud mother indeed a talent not letting anything stop her.

How long have you been drawing?LSR:I have been drawing since I was a kid. It was my escape and my passion. However, I did not want to go to art school nor did I want to major inart, so painting was just a hobby I did for myself. Where does your inspiration come from?LSR:I am inspired by events that happen in my personal life. Most ofpaintings are autobiographically. Some are inspired by emotions that Ican relate to. For example, the painting “The After Hours” is inspiredby the movie Unfaithful. Though I have not personally experienced thatparticular situation, I can relate to the passion they possessed. How old were you when you sold your first painting?LSR:I think I was 22 years old. I was a part of a women’s art group thatmet every Thursday morning. Our group supplied the artwork for TheUniversity of Alabama’s Student Health Center. The painting was“Transformation.” It was a half woman half butterfly. I haverepainted this piece and I am using it as my logo now.Did you ever feel that your art wasn’t good enough?LSR:Yes. My first sale was such a special sale because I was going toreplace it with a more traditional piece. I did not think people wouldlike my original style. However, the night before I was going to replacethat painting, a lady called and said she loved it and wanted to buy it.I was shocked! That experience taught me a huge lesson. Never secondguess yourself nor think that your work is not good enough. If you staytrue to yourself, someone will relate to your work and someone will buyit. What kind of response have you gotten from critics ?LSR:I have been told by many people, and it is sad for me to say this, butmany black people that my work is “too black.” They tell me I need topaint white people or paint things white people will like in order tobe successful. I am a black girl from Alabama with a career and afamily. I paint my truth. I am not just trying to make a quick buck. I want to build a career selling original and giclee prints of myAfrican American Art. I believe I will be successful doing what Itruly love if I stay true to myself and I find a loyal target audience.I believe my audience will find me when the time is right. I just haveto trust God’s timing. Why don’t you paint the faces in your art?LSR:When I paint I am trying to express a feeling; love, despair, happiness, etc. I use body language to tell my story. I also believe art issubjective. The meaning of a painting depends on who is looking at it.By adding facial expressions, it limits the scope and appeal of mywork. I want you to look at my paintings and have your experiencesguide your perception. What made you want to start your own gallery?LSR:In 2002, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). I lost theability to use my hands and I was paralyzed on my left side. Though Icould not write my name nor button my shirt, my ability to paint wasnot affected. This simply amazed me. Then it occurred to me, paintingwas my survival tool. And at that moment, my childhood passion became mysaving grace. My mom always told me; when you receive a blessing, passit on. By sharing my artwork with the world, I am passing on myblessing. In the next five years where do you in vision yourself ?LSR:I hope to be a thriving art gallery specializing in African Americanfine arts and gifts world wide. I hope to turn Scott Robinson designsinto a business that specializes in quality unique art. As I grow andexperience life, I hope my paintings and technique will grow with me. Iwant Scott Robinson designs to be a brand that stands for truth andquality. It will be nice to have people study my art and technique oneday.

YOUNG TEACHERS
By: Joseph J. Mazzella
I was taking my youngest son to grade school the other day when I saw one of my daughter’s former teachers. We talked for a moment and she shared how much she missed having my daughter in class. She said she rarely had a student so kind, helpful, and willing to learn. This wonderful teacher’s kind words made me smile, and I thanked her when she gave some of the credit to me. I knew in my heart, though, that as much as I have taught my daughter how to love and how to live in this life, she has taught me even more.
It is funny how after all these years I find that I am still learning how to live and how to love. It is even funnier too that so many of my teachers are younger than I am. I think that when it comes to choosing and sharing love and joy the teachers often become the students and the students often become the teachers. I am so happy that I got three of the best in my kids. My youngest son’s Autism keeps him from saying much but he can still teach a lot when it comes to love and joy. His smile and laugh light up every room he enters and his happiness always brightens everyone else’s day. My oldest boy too still struggles with Autism, yet his caring and kindly spirit have made him more friends in his young life than I will ever have in mine. He has a Master’s Degree when it comes to Kindness and a PhD when it comes to Love.
I am so thankful for my young teachers and so blessed that God sent them here to be my children. Even while I continue to write about and share love and joy in my own life, I know I will always be a student of these things as well. It is why we are all here, after all. We are here to learn how to love, to teach others how to love, and to share God’s love everyday of our lives. The classroom on love is always open in this life and in the next. Don’t overlook your own young teachers then. You may learn more from them than you ever dreamed possible.
